Jet Favre

It's 12:45 in the morning and my head is spinning. Brett Favre is a Jet. Honestly, I'm not sure how I feel about this, so I'm going to try and work it out while typing. I like pro/con lists, so let's see what wins out:

PROS:
  1. Favre is coming off an MVP-like season; even if he has a drop-off, he's still better than Pennington or Clemens at this point.
  2. Favre should be really motivated to prove he can still play. I like when players have that F U chip on their shoulder. Revenge/feeling disrespected, despite oftentimes being a load of bull crap, is one of the most effective motivators in sports.
  3. The Jets players/fans are going to slurp him like crazy, which will feed his massive ego and bring positive results.
  4. If Favre was a Jet last year, the Jets would have won against the Ravens in Week 2, the Bills in Week 4, the Eagles in Week 6, the Bills again in Week 8, and the Titans in Week 16. That's a 9 win season, plus they played the Giants, Browns, Bengals and Patriots (2nd game) very tough. They were probably a quarterback away from being a legit team like they were in '06.
  5. The Jets were already a better team on paper with all the additions they made, plus they have the putrid NFC West this year, so the Jets might have a real chance.
  6. Cotchery is a stud. Coles is a very good receiver. Baker and Keller can catch from the TE position. Jones is good and will only get better with a QB that can throw. Favre's scrambling skills and mobility will take pressure off the line. A better offense takes pressure off the defense.
  7. This means Pennington is on his way out. I loved Chad, but this clears the way for Clemens eventually.
  8. Deanna Favre in the luxury suite. Milfy.
  9. If nothing else, the Jets are now relevant. Not necessarily better, but relevant. The Jets have always been the Giants' bitch in the New York media, and they probably still are. But it's a fairer fight now.
CONS:
  1. Favre was a flat-out dick throughout this whole process, and I lost a ton of respect for him over the past through months. He's so full of crap. That Fox News interview was a joke and only served to make him look worse.
  2. How long can it really last? He's flirted with retirement for years; who's to say it's really going to be worth it?
  3. From everything I'm hearing, Favre really had to be convinced to come to the Jets. Ahh, nothing like pathetically begging someone with zero leverage to join your team. Grab your ankles and think happy thoughts! It'll only hurt for a minute! Good Lord. The Jets out-whored a whore, and Jets fans are so desperate for attention that they'll take it as well.
  4. I was worried about Favre being Cinderella last year, and distinctly remember thinking Favre turned into the pumpkin in the NFC Title Game. So the Jets might have replaced a noodle with a pumpkin.
  5. Unitas as a Charger. Namath as a Ram. Harris as a Seahawk. Smith as a Cardinal. Simpson as a 49er. McNair as a Raven. Rice as a Raider. Culpepper as a Raider. Moss as a Raider. Sapp as a Raider. Javon Walker as a Raider. Aaron Brooks as a Raider. Lamont Jordan as a Raider. God, I hate the freaking Raiders. Commitment to Excrement. Wait, what was my point? Oh yeah, the Raiders suck.
  6. If Favre plays 80% of the Jets' snaps, the Pack gets a first round pick. Not a fan of sacrificing the future for the immediate.
  7. Favre admitted to not mentoring Rodgers, so is there any hope he'll mentor Clemens? I doubt it.
  8. Favre turned into the clingy crazy bitch that doesn't know when to let go, and now the Packers can laugh as the Jets are the ones who have to put up with the will he/won't he crap every off-season.
  9. Geting a 39-year old Favre is like sleeping with current-day Britney Spears. Sure, they've looked good in the past and have made a comeback recently (have you seen recent pics of Britney? Looks like someone hid the Red Bull and Cheetos on her), but at the end of the day you're not geting them in their prime. Sure, you can truthfully say you bagged Britney Spears/Brett Favre, but in reality you're screwing around with nothing but a big name diva with a ton of baggage, some lean years recently, a lack of commitment and a drug problem. And if you don't protect yourself, you may end up with a painful and long-lasting reminder of your mistake.
So in the end it's a tie. In my head, I know this won't end well. Why? Because it's the Jets. Nothing ever seems to work as it should. It's a desperate attempt to grab attention and relevancy, and Mangini/Tannenbaum seem to be banking their jobs on it. But rationality and fanhood don't go hand-in-hand, so I'm jumping in with both feet and with the Hulk Hands securely fastened.

Another huge signing by the black hole also known as the New York J-E-T-S.

Let's see, Kimo Von Who?

Alan Who?

Inexorable I said...

Great pros/cons list, in my fairly uninformed opinion, as I don't pay too much attention to pre-season and trade stuff unless its the Giants:

Savior, your team is coming off a 4-12 season, I don't think you'll be in a worse position at the end of this season.

Yea, there were a lot of free agent signings and your team is better on paper before the Favre trade but I think with this final trade its very possible the Jets could be a contender this year.

Honestly though, with all the new people on the Jets, not just Favre, your team may take some time to find chemistry and work well together. Not sure if a training camp and 4 pre-season games are enough for a team to find its stride.

Maybe they will this season but if not, as long as Brett stays at the helm for a season or two after this coming one, I think you'll be happy with this trade.

Couple things have to happen:
1) You need a good running game, not sure if Jones is the answer
2) Favre has to stay passionate and have his ego, demands placated
3) All these new guys have to get along with the guys that have been there longer and work well together.

That happens and you'll be happy I think. Like every year man, except when they play my Giants, I'll be pulling for the tenants.

Kimo should have used his ACL-tearing cheap shot skills on Brady while he was here. And Faneca, if nothing else, will serve as the learning tree for Mangold and Ferguson.

Bill, I agree with everything you said. Except the tenants part... actually, I can't disagree with that either. Dammit. I do like Jones more than you do, mainly because I thought he was hamstrung by the QB and the right side of the line.

Geez, Matt! Don't get your panties in a bunch!!!!!!

I was simply pointing out that the Jets recent history of spending big bucks on free agents hasn't necessarily panned out for them too well. Same thing can be said for the deadskins, if you think about it.

I hope Faneca works out for you, but we are now hearing that he was extremely resistant to the OL coach's philosophies last year in the 'burgh. It sounds like his attitude was causing some problems, and may have been part of the reason the OL performance was so suckified last season.

These guys get big bucks to play for NYJ, and then seem to disappear.

Oh, and the ACL thing? If you watch the replay closely, you'll see that he was pushed into Palmer's leg by a bengals lineman trying to block him. Totally unintentional on his part.

Ironically enough, I only made that comment to get your panties in a bunch. It was unintentional, but I wouldn't have minded if he did it to Brady.

I'm hoping Faneca is to the Jets what Pete Kendall was to the Redskins. Disgruntled in his last stop, but still has talent and now is happier in a new location. Here's to hoping he becomes gruntled in NY.

I wish Alan nothing but the best. He was a key part of the recent success of the Steelers, and I'll always appreciate him for that. I'm a little dismayed about the new reports surfacing regarding his attitude last year, but hey...people don't like change, and the coaching staff had a bunch of new faces last year.

It will be very interesting to see how the "new" Jets do this year. I look forward to seeing them in action.
